“Dare Greatly” 

 

 

I think there's no denying that life is a battle. We say it, and often don't really mean it. But deep down, we know it.

 

I came across these words by the 26th President of the United States, Theodore Roosevelt. Definitely some good inspiration here for meeting your copywriting goals in 2007. Ninety-seven years ago, he uttered these profound thoughts in Paris, on April 23rd...

 

"It is not the critic who counts, not the man who points out how the strong man stumbles, or where the doer of deeds could have done them better.

 

"The credit belongs to the man who is actually in the arena, whose face is marred by dust and sweat and blood - who strives valiantly, who errs, who comes up short again and again, because there is no effort without error and shortcoming but who does actually strive to do the deeds.

 

"Who knows great enthusiasms, the great devotions,  who spends himself in a worthy cause; who at the best knows in the end the triumph of high achievement, and who at the worst, if he fails, at least fails while daring greatly, so that his place shall never be with those cold and timid souls who neither know victory nor defeat."

 

I love that last part: "...timid souls who neither know victory nor defeat."

 

I think something like 80% of people who take a copywriting course never end up starting a career as copywriter.

 

They play it safe. They don't want to have the "pressure" of writing copy that converts.

 

Safe?

 

No, there's nothing safe about standing still.

 

Life is full of risks. I've written ads that have bombed. I've created websites that have not worked. In all those cases I redid them (sometimes from scratch) and got them working. My successes out-number my failures by far. At the beginning that

wasn't the case. Now, failures happen less and less. But everything doesn't always fall into place.

 

So you need two things to succeed in 2007...

 

1. The ability to dare to do great things.

 

2. The ability to bounce back quickly when you fail.
