The Devil’s Garage Sale

Finally, there's snow again in Ontario. It's been falling for the last two days, and things are looking white again.

I've been busy with a major copywriting project that involves a good four hours a day of hardcore typing. It can get heavy at times. I needed a break. So I headed outside for a walk. Just a little way down the street I noticed a garage sale happening in

the driveway of someone's home. "Strange, a garage sale in the winter," I thought.

Strange, indeed, until I saw that it was the devil himself -- yes Lucifer, the Prince of Darkness, Satan, the pointed-tail one in the red suit -- who was running the shop.

"What's with the sale," I asked?

"Christmas time is always bad on business," Satan told me. "All that cheer and goodwill almost ruined me. I need to make up for lost sales, so I'm selling some of my best weapons at major discounts."

He had these dark glowing orbs on the table before him. Each with a label: "Hatred $498" "Fear $958" "Selfishness $2938" "Jealousy $875"

"Doesn't look like there's anything here for me," I said.

"You're not my target market," said Satan.

"Thanks."

Then I noticed an orb on the far left of one of the tables. It didn't have a label. I picked it up and asked, "What's this for? How much?"

Suddenly old Sat's face looked petrified. He lunged over the table and snatched the orb from my hands.

"That's not for sale. Not at any price!" he yelled, clutching the orb to his chest.

Now I was curious. "What is it?"

"It's my secret weapon. My most powerful weapon. When I use it my victims don't know it comes from me. They actually think they’re doing the right thing by listening to me."

"What is it?" I asked again.

He looked left and right to make sure nobody would hear him. Then he leaned over the table and whispered…

"Discouragement."
