Is Your Office a Mess?
I remember hearing an interview with John Carlton, where he said he enjoyed having papers piled up all over his office. Never knows what he's going to find when he shuffles something.
May work for him, but not for me.
Nonetheless, the Messy Office Phenomena does happen to me, I must confess, whether I like it or not.
Seems like there's always too much work to be done, that organization gets put off and put off. Granted, my office is hardly a pigsty. In fact, even in its worse-case scenario it looks pretty good.
A secret I learned from an organization management guru was to spend 5 minutes everyday tidying up. I do this after lunch before checking emails.
5 minutes a day times 5 days a week is nearly half-an-hour of tidying a week.
Why bother keeping the office clean?
Well, why bother combing your hair?
To me it just feels better. Feels like things are under control.
A saying I've never forgotten is that "environment is stronger than will power." If your outer environment is chaotic, then so will your inner environment be chaotic. When your mind is a mess, writing copy becomes difficult.
Compare. See how you feel when the office is clean and looks professional. If it feels better, keep at it (or hire someone to do it for you).
If having piles of paper everywhere feels better, go with that.
Ray Bradbury, sci-fi writer, had an even better idea... His office was filled with "stuff." Looked like a museum. Anything interesting he owned he'd have on display. From plants to artefacts to an old fashioned typewriter.
First step: Clean it up. Second step: Fill it with inspiration.
Putting up pictures of famous copywriters, and successful entrepreneurs would be a good move. Also framing quotes you need to know, is another.
Create another world, where your creativity and productivity can flourish.

p.s. Regarding yesterday's Copy Cartoon, Mark Pyrc wrote, " John, this is a CLASSIC! Thanks for the grin. Very creative." You can still view it online here.
