I'm executing some email management strategies (including hiring a gatekeeper to handle all the mail coming in from my two websites).
As I'm changing email addresses, I was changing my address on many email subscriptions I receive. In some cases I was simply unsubscribing.
When Nicole was in the hospital I'd send flowers from 800-Flowers. Now that they have my email address they send blatant ads every week: 50% Off Red Roses! Buy 2 Tulips Get The Leaves For FREE!
Alright, enough of that!
So I clicked unsubscribe. Instead of just telling me they unsubscribed me, they were smart and asked the following question:
| We value your opinion. Please take a moment to tell us why you are unsubscribing from 1-800-FLOWERS.COM® emails: |
| I receive too many emails from 1-800-FLOWERS.COM®. I am no longer interested in receiving emails from 1-800-FLOWERS.COM®. |
Well, they were smart enough to ASK a question. I don't think much of their options though.
The second option, doesn't really ask anything that isn't obvious.
The first option is the wrong route. I don't think it should be about whether they send TOO MANY emails but whether the emails were just annoying or boring.
I have a CD here by Jim McCann, founder of 800-Flowers. It's terrific. I listened to it once then told Nicole about it, and we both listened to it together. It's filled with moving stories and good laughs.
Why don't they put some of that content into their emails? Build a relationship with their customers. Send something more than just "buy, buy, buy!"
It's rarely ever an issue of whether you're copy is too long or your emails too frequent, it is a matter of whether they are boring or whether they are being received by the wrong people.
With two of my websites I send an email everyday, and am profiting over $1,000/month -- even though the lists are small.
