Terry: Hello, this is Terry Dean from www.MyMarketingCoach.com. I’m here with Shaune Clarke.

The reason I brought him on this call and the reason I’m going to be interviewing him today is because about 18 months ago I was looking on the internet and I was really upset with the fact that the majority of copywriting that I saw online, the majority of websites, were just full of hype.

They were full of exaggeration. They were full of promises that I knew could not be kept, so I got really frustrated looking at this. I even had a couple of coaching clients at the time who told me they had hired one copywriter or another copywriter, sometimes what you’d consider the A-list copywriters, and that at times these people would even make up testimonials or they would do something else that they were extremely uncomfortable with.

So I was in an attitude where I was looking for someone who wrote honest copy, who wrote copy that really had an emotional bond with the prospect, that really spoke to the deeper emotions of the prospect instead of just speaking to what some people call “the 7 deadly sins.”

During that research, the person who stood out to me the most, that I tracked down and spent some time with him on the phone and have been in contact with him at times since then, is Shaune Clarke.

That’s why I invited him on this call and that’s the reason I wanted to talk to him today about writing copy that really resonates with people and goes to their heart instead of just surface copy that’s full of exaggerated promises, because I think he’s really one of the premier experts on this subject.

I want to thank you for being on this call with me, Shaune.

Shaune: Wow, Terry. You have no idea what that means, coming from you. You are known in this industry as the one guy who will really tell the truth. Certainly your endorsement of my work has always held a special place for me. That may sound cliché, but it’s really true.

The reason is because as I look around the industry myself, both the internet marketing and copywriting industry, there’s a lot of what I’ll call “back scratching” going on.

I know you make a distinction between a testimonial and an endorsement -- an endorsement obviously coming with a lot more stock.            So your endorsement, and then saying these words that you just said, is really quite an honor for me.

I was speaking about you the other day. You’re like the godfather of internet marketing, and in particular I think, as I was studying internet marketing and reviewing your material, your focus on copywriting for the web was more than anyone else.

So it’s a great honor for me to be here, Terry. Thank you.

Terry: Thank you. Let’s just get right into asking you some of the questions. I want to go into some deep questions probably, but we’ll start off with a real light one. How did you first get started in copywriting?

Shaune: It goes back to kind of what you were talking about in your own frustration, Terry. The truth is that I consider myself much more of an organic or natural marketing mindset, if you will. I now know that that’s where the best copywriters really come from, is having that marketing mindset and then combining that with the art of writing something in print.

However, when I started out I spent a year studying internet marketing, including your material, and you were one of the people who were really making me focus on copy, copy, copy.

I said, “Okay, after a year I’ve got my niche.” I was going to go into the lacrosse market and I was ready to go. I said, “Okay, the one missing component is I need a copywriter.”

At that time I had a personal health product that I was marketing and decided, “I’m going to test this copywriter with this product.” I had him write the letter and it went against my grain, so anyone listening to this who’s reading all that stuff with the yellow highlighting and it seems exaggerated and who feels uncomfortable with that, I know how that feels because I was there.

Despite my better judgment, I hired this well-known copywriter. To my great delight now – at the time I was quite frustrated with myself – that copy didn’t work. I actually went back to him and said, “Hey, this isn’t really working well,” three times. I now know that that gentleman, who’s a big fan of “swiping,” just gave me three swipes. It wasn’t three revisions.

At the time I didn’t even know what that word meant. I was just like, “What’s going on here? This isn’t right. Something’s off. It’s not congruent. It’s awkward.”

Having had the experience that I’ve had in selling things one-to-one with people with what I call graceful persuasion, I said, “You know what, I’m just not going to listen to these guys anymore. I’m going to study all their material.”

I spent another six months and $20,000 studying all their material, then I said, “Okay, now I get what they’re doing, but let me see if I can take my 16 years of dealing with people one-on-one and interacting with them in a graceful way, doing what I call moving them to an honest purchasing decision or purchasing choice, and see if I can’t translate that to print.”

I did that, and that started my first letter, www.DynamicResponseMarketing.com, positioning myself as a copywriter.

I say, Terry, that I felt like a musician because nobody else was doing it and I was kind of going against the grain. I thought, “I’m just going to be like a musician. I’m going to play my own music and we’re going to see if people like it.”

And I got bombarded with clients and then it got even beyond that. I was getting hit with copywriters wanting to know how they were going to write like that, and none more stunning to me than when you called me and said, “Hey Shaune, I want to review your material.”

So that’s really how I started. It was not by choice at all. I landed into it out of necessity, and now I find I just love the coaching aspect and I particularly love, like a client that you just sent me with that ayurvedic formula – that letter that I wrote, to me I just look at it and go, “Wow, that’s really a great letter.” I just love it!  It’s kind of like for me putting together a masterpiece now.

So that’s how I got started.

 Terry: Wow, you had a lot of information in there. A couple things that I picked out listening to you specifically is you went over the term real quick, “graceful persuasion” as you call it.

Could you tell us a little bit more about what graceful persuasion is and how it compares to what we probably call the “normal” copywriting style?
